Buyer’s guide: the best website builders for dispensaries
There’s no single “best” platform for every store, but there is a best way to choose. Use these criteria, the scorecard and the demo questions below to compare any option side by side.
Why dispensaries need more than a generic site builder
A general-purpose website builder can make a beautiful homepage in an afternoon. But a dispensary website has jobs most builders were never designed for: verifying ages, enforcing purchase limits, syncing a menu that changes by the hour, and ranking locally in a category where most paid advertising is off the table.
On the other end, many dispensaries rely on menus and storefronts provided by marketplaces. Those can be quick to set up, but they often come with trade-offs in SEO, branding and who owns the customer relationship.
The right choice depends on your store. This guide gives you a consistent way to compare options, whoever you’re talking to.
The 8 criteria that matter
1. Compliance built in
Look for age gates, ID capture, purchase-limit enforcement and separate medical and adult-use settings, configurable for your state. Ask who updates these settings when rules change, and how quickly.
2. A menu on your own domain
Your products should be real pages on your website, each with its own URL, not content framed in from another company’s site. This is the single biggest factor in whether you can rank for products and categories. Learn more in why embedded menus hurt your rankings.
3. Real-time POS and inventory sync
Prices and stock should update automatically from your point of sale, ideally within minutes. Ask what happens when the connection drops: does the menu keep selling items you may not have?
4. SEO tools that go beyond the homepage
You want editable titles and descriptions, clean URLs, category and brand pages, local landing pages, sitemaps and redirect management. Bonus points for help actually creating the content, not just the tools.
5. Speed and mobile experience
Most shoppers browse on their phones. Test every option on your own phone over a cellular connection: how long does the menu take to load, and how many taps does checkout take?
6. Ownership of your data and customers
Who owns the customer list, order history and marketing consent? Can you export it at any time? Will customers see other dispensaries’ products while browsing yours?
7. A pricing model that fits your margins
Some platforms charge a flat monthly fee. Others take a commission or per-order fee, or charge for placement and ads. Model your costs at your current volume and at the volume you’re aiming for, since commission-based costs grow as you grow.
8. Setup and ongoing support
Who builds the site, moves your domain, and trains your staff? What does support look like on a busy Friday night or on 4/20? Ask for typical response times, not best-case ones.
Your scorecard
Score each option from 0 to 2 on every row: 0 = missing, 1 = partly there or costs extra, 2 = fully covered. Anything that scores 0 on the first three rows deserves a hard second look.
| Criteria | What good looks like | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|---|
| Compliance | Age gate, ID capture, purchase limits, med and rec settings for your state | __ / 2 |
| Menu on your domain | Every product, category and brand is a real, indexable page on your site | __ / 2 |
| POS sync | Automatic price and stock updates within minutes; safe behavior when offline | __ / 2 |
| SEO tools | Editable metadata, local pages, sitemaps, redirects and help creating content | __ / 2 |
| Speed & mobile | Fast menu on a cellular connection; checkout in a few taps | __ / 2 |
| Data ownership | You own and can export customers, orders and consent records | __ / 2 |
| Pricing model | Predictable cost that doesn’t grow with every order you take | __ / 2 |
| Setup & support | Done-for-you launch, staff training and fast help when it matters | __ / 2 |
Questions to ask on every demo
- Can you show me a live product page on a customer’s own domain, and how it appears in Google?
- How often does the menu sync with my POS, and what happens if the sync fails?
- How do you handle age verification and purchase limits in my state? Who updates them when rules change?
- If I leave, can I export my customer list, order history and marketing consent records?
- What will I pay per month at my current order volume, and at twice that volume?
- Do shoppers ever see other dispensaries’ products or ads on my menu?
- Who builds my site, migrates my domain and sets up redirects? How long does launch take?
- What does support look like on evenings, weekends and holidays?
- Can I talk to two current customers with a store similar to mine?
Red flags
- Vague answers about data ownership or no way to export your customers.
- “SEO included” with no specifics about where product pages live.
- Fees that scale with every order without a clear cap.
- Long contracts with no performance commitments or exit terms.
- No references from stores like yours.
Making the decision
Add up your scores, but don’t treat the total as the whole story. Weigh the criteria that matter most for your store. A single-location shop focused on pickup might prioritize menu SEO and support. A multi-location operator might weight compliance and data ownership more heavily.
Whatever you choose, get the key promises in writing: launch timeline, sync frequency, data export and pricing at higher volumes.
